Victim-blaming is never good. In the past, I've been in at least two relationships (that I know of) that were past sexual assault victims, and they carry that pain around forever. It didn't always manifest itself, but when it did, it could come completely out of the blue (for them as well as for you). Neither of those people reported it at the time, and I suspect the number is much, much higher.
The thing that Depp's attorneys successfully managed to call into question is whom exactly was the victim. Speaking for myself, as a person who was not in that relationship, didn't watch a single minute of the trial and generally didn't have the bandwidth to process the waterfall of evidence that came out of it, the little I did hear made me cringe.
But as you state, perhaps even more worrisome is the relevance and importance of truth in the outcome, and how much more important it is just to have a good lawyer in the first place. Regardless of which “team” you’re on, I think we can all agree that Depp’s legal team ran-up-the-score on Heard’s legal team. That was like watching a college football team play against 9th graders.
