As I've worked in technology my entire career, it's interesting to examine the events of 1991 with respect to how important the impact of technology was on the outcome. It was the use of local computer BBSes, the period equivalent of modern-day internet forums, which helped circumvent the stiffling communications wet-blanket that those that were trying to seize power had put in place.
