Russia does not have a history of treating Ukrainians well- see Holodomor genocide where Ukrainians were dying in the streets from starvation by the millions.

I'm not necessarily suggesting that the west has Ukrainians' best interest at heart either. Ukraine should have a right to sovereignity and to choose their own direction without the threat of the Empire seeking to reclaim it.
