I've lived in Canada and worked for months at a time in Europe, and I will say that Canadians are more like Europeans than Americans in that regard. Also, it does somewhat matter whether you're in Northern or Southern Europe.

I think the biggest thing that was most baffling to non-Americans when I traveled abroad were our politics. I once got into a heated debate when I was surrounded by drunk New Zealanders who wanted me to explain a whole bunch of American policies that I fundamentally disagreed with. In other words, I actually agreed with them, but they 1. Had consumed enough alcohol and 2. Had been bottling things up for so long, and 3. Finally was "1vs1" with an American- it didn't matter whether I agreed with their points or not, they wanted some sort of explanation.
