I would actually submit that from my experiences, my worst transit experiences have occurred on ingress back to the US from abroad. In other words, trying to get back into my own country. I once even remarked to the "fellow American" searching my bags in Toronto, "Why is it that I have more trouble getting back into my own country than I do when I fly to Portugal, Norway, Spain, or Turkey?"
