I started developing on a VT-220 monochrome terminal. Some were green on black. Some were amber on black. Even on the PC where there were more colours available, there were several color combos which were popular. QuickBasic was light gray on navy. dBase if I recall correctly was white on black. The Borland IDEs evolved to yellow on blue, but Turbo Pascal if I recall correctly was like yellow on black.

In any case, when color editors with white backgrounds came around they were a breath of fresh air. I've never considered anything else sense.
