I first noticed this with one of the early Batman movies; I don't remember if it was the Michael Keaton one or the one before that. I even remember as I walked out of the theater hearing another guy say to his date, "That was the loudest movie I've ever heard."

We always have subtitles on in our home- my wife hates loud sound effects and I hate missing dialogue. I believe it's endemic to production companies trying to "nail that summer blockbuster."

It may be starting to backfire though- I wanted desperately to take our family of six to see The Spiderman movie earlier this summer, but decided against it when I heard that it was impossible to understand the dialogue. I'll be damned if I'm going to waste a C-Note for my family to go to a movie none of us can understand. Instead, I bought it on Prime Video this past week and we'll watch it on Movie night, with subtitles.
