I acknowledge that I'm not a black woman so it could very well be that I'm not perceptive enough to see the sleight, but specifically regarding the "are you afraid of black women" question, to me it sorta seemed like a lot of these questions he was asking himself were questions that he's picked out that have been asked before (publicly or privately). I am reminded of Prince's 1981 Controversy album, specifically the namesake song when he asks:

"Am I black or white, am I straight... or gay"

And believe me, in 1981, everyone went nuts about that line. I feel like both of them were toying with the controversy that their words or lyrics would incite.

That in no way dismisses what I think is the gist of your article though, which if I could summarize, is the literary equivalent of "Keep my name out yo' mouth."
