What drove the move towards the walled gardens of Google, Facebook and Amazon? I will claim that the move towards replacing the rich plethora of internet protocols with a single protocol, HTTP, is much to blame.

Excellent point, but this came about (mostly) due to REST, which was a result of two things- a) Port 80 was usually open through firewalls, and b) SOAP was so bad that someone made REST.
