As a kid who grew up with "feet in both camps", I can say that growing up was sometimes very hard. It gets easier as an adult, because at some point you realize you are going to find people you love (and people that love you) and people you despise (and people who despise you) in every arbitrary subdivision in the world. You don't really have to choose en masse- you can (in fact you have to) make itemized choices of what you wish to embrace regardless of where it comes from.
I personally have no problem with culturally ̶a̶p̶p̶r̶o̶p̶r̶i̶a̶t̶i̶n̶g̶ appreciating parts of the many flavors that make up our American culture. For the sake of argument, I appreciate Chinese American culture for many reasons, partially because I have some idea how important the contributions of the ancestors of Chinese Americans were to what we currently call the United States. As much as humanly possible, I try to learn a little bit about the journey of a people from historical times up to and through today. The more I learn about different cultures, the more empathetic I find myself being to present day status. And in just about every culture I’ve encountered, I’ve found people I really vibe with.. and sometimes the opposite. It’s almost like what matters most is what’s beneath the skin 😊. (Not implying that you or anyone else doesn’t know this already, just commenting on how amazing that it keeps on being reinforced).
