A Humbling lesson from my 6 year old son

My son, who’s seven now (he was six when this event occurred), is a bit of an Anglophile. I’m not entirely sure where he acquired this interest; perhaps it was his early interest in the musician George Michael from a couple of years prior (in an effort to recognize music and musicians from different musical genres and countries, I put on a George Michael video for him when he was younger). For whatever reason, he’s fascinated by the United Kingdom, Great Britain, and UK history.

Some Americans mistakenly assume that the UK and Great Britain are the same entity- they are not. It is my understanding (and please correct me if I’m wrong), that the UK is the union of Great Britain, Scotland, and Ireland.

The flag of the UK is known as the Union Flag (though at sea, it’s referred to as the Union Jack). Most of us probably recognize that flag:

One of my son’s talents is also drawing. He’s so much better of an artist at his age than I ever was at his age (if I’m honest, he’s so much better at many things than I was at his age). He’s created several original pieces of art, and his work was chosen to be publicly displayed recently.

Along those lines, recently, he came to me with a drawing that he claimed was the flag of England, and it looked like this:
